Salt water taffy is a soft, chewy candy made mainly from sugar, glucose syrup, water, oil or butter, salt, flavoring, and coloring. Despite its name, it is not normally made with seawater. It is known for its light, stretchy texture and wide range of flavors.
The name is linked to Atlantic City, New Jersey, where the candy became popular in the late 1800s. According to the best-known story, a seaside candy shop was flooded with ocean water, and the owner jokingly offered the affected candy as “salt water taffy.” The name remained, although modern salt water taffy does not contain ocean water.
